A Mission-Driven Web Redesign for a Nonprofit
Kababayan Multicultural Centre (KMC), a nonprofit organization supporting immigrants and newcomers in Canada, needed a modernized website to bridge the gap between their services and online presence. The pandemic accelerated the need for digital accessibility, pushing KMC to upgrade their platform to better reflect their mission and improve user experience. The goal for this redesign was to create a visually appealing, easy-to-navigate site that clearly communicated KMC's mission.
Design Process:
Our process began with a thorough audit of KMC's existing website to identify pain points in navigation, usability, and design. The old design made navigating between pages difficult, and users often struggled to find essential services and information. The overall content failed to communicate KMC's mission and its services effectively.
We also conducted research on nonprofit websites with similar missions and incorporated insights from KMC's leadership and staff. This collaborative effort allowed us to define key features and establish design priorities aligned with their goals.
Solutions:
The redesign introduced a user-friendly layout with simplified navigation, ensuring users could easily find services and resources. Visual storytelling elements were added to reflect KMC's mission and foster emotional connections. Key new features included a prominent search bar, interactive forms for client registration, and a dedicated resources page. A warm and vibrant visual identity was curated, as KMC lacked established brand guidelines. This ensured the website felt welcoming and culturally inclusive.
A mobile-first approach was adopted to guarantee accessibility across all devices, reinforcing KMC's commitment to supporting newcomers regardless of their technological access points.
Results:
Three months after launching the new website on July 1, 2024, the platform achieved an increase in unique visitors, a huge increase in site sessions, and a surge in leads generated.
The addition of blog features and interactive forms resulted in greater community engagement and streamlined client onboarding. KMC's redesigned website, which communicated its history and mission clearly, contributed to the organization winning the Golden Balanggay Award for Most Influential Community Organization in September 2024.
Final Thoughts
The redesign of KMC's website highlighted the value of aligning web design with a nonprofit's mission and audience. By creating a platform that prioritizes accessibility and engagement, KMC can now extend its reach and more effectively serve immigrants and newcomers.
Doing this project also opened doors for me, as I started working for the organization not long after the website launch.
